Ben Stokes will be the greatest England captain ever: Michael Vaughan
London (IANS). Former England captain Michael Vaughan has praised Ben Stokes for his leadership of the Test team and believes that the all-rounder has the potential to become one of the greatest captains in the history of cricket.
Under the captaincy of Ben Stokes, England made a strong comeback in the Ashes series that ended on Monday. Despite being down 0-2 in the series, the team made a comeback to finish the series 2-2. England could easily have won the series 3–2 if the Manchester Test, where they dominated, had not ended in a draw due to rain.
“He’s only been in charge for 14 months, but already he’s one of England’s greatest ever captains,” Vaughan said. I think when the time comes, he will be regarded as the greatest Test captain England has ever had.”
In his column for The Telegraph, Vaughan wrote, Stokes has now won 13 out of 18 Tests as captain, which is unbelievable. But you’re also thinking of a deeper effect. I think Stokes will in times to come be remembered as the captain who helped change the way Test cricket is played – and that’s certainly a perfect legacy.
He further said that Stokes will be remembered in future as a captain who along with his players in the team tried to change the way Test cricket was played.
“This Ashes ended in a 2-2 draw, but of the two captains, the questions would be more for Pat Cummins than for Stokes. It is quite clear what Stokes is trying to achieve. For the moment, he wants to get the best out of all the talent in England and force them all to think how good they can be.
England’s next Test assignment after the Ashes is a tour of India from January 25 to March 11 next year for a five-match series that will see matches played in Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam, Rajkot, Ranchi and Dharamsala.
Vaughan expects England to continue to play their ultra-aggressive game under Stokes during the Test series in India.
