Bengal school recruitment scam: ED suggests Kolkata ESI hospital for Sujay Bhadra’s surgery
Kolkata (IANS). The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has recommended the Employees’ State Insurance (ESI) Hospital at Joka here for bypass surgery on Sujay Krishna Bhadra, the main accused in the multi-crore school recruitment scam in West Bengal.
According to sources, the investigating authorities have already sent Bhadra’s medical reports from the state-run SSKM Medical College and Hospital to the ESI Hospital authorities for examination.
Bhadra is currently admitted in SSKM. Insisting that his bypass surgery will be done at a private hospital in Kolkata, the accused has also approached the Calcutta High Court for bail in the matter.
A single-judge bench of Justice Tirthankar Ghose of the Calcutta High Court directed the ED to constitute an independent medical board to ascertain whether Bhadra required bypass surgery.
The ED has already raised doubts in the Calcutta High Court on the necessity of bypass surgery for Bhadra.
Meanwhile, it has started the process of constituting a medical board for the purpose. ED officials personally went to SSKM to collect Bhadra’s medical reports before sending them to the ESI hospital authorities.
Justice Ghose, during the hearing on August 3, said that Bhadra’s treatment can continue even without being released on bail.
According to him, if he was released on bail only for medical treatment, it would send a wrong message to other prisoners.
The next hearing in the case will be on August 9.
