Tamil Nadu interim budget today: Important announcements to be made

Tamil Nadu: Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu will present the interim budget for the year 2026-27 in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly on Tuesday (February 17). Following this, Agriculture Minister M.R.K. Panneerselvam will present the interim agriculture budget.
It is reported that since this is an election year, several exemptions may be announced in the interim budget statement.
Every year, the budget is presented during the Legislative Assembly session in the last week of February or the first week of March. Since Assembly elections are due this year, this is being presented as an interim budget.
Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu will present the interim budget statement in the Legislative Assembly at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday. It is expected that several new schemes will be included in the budget to meet the demands of all sections of the population. These schemes may include schemes specifically benefiting women, farmers, youth, and small businesses.
Following this, Agriculture Minister M.R.K. Panneerselvam will present the agriculture budget. Various incentives and schemes may be introduced to benefit farmers.
After the presentation of the budget report, the session’s duration will be finalized in a business review meeting chaired by Assembly Speaker M. Appavu. It is reported that the budget session may last until Friday (Feb. 20).
The Tamil Nadu Cabinet is scheduled to meet on February 23 to immediately approve the announcements made in the budget statement and implement important projects.
Minister E.V. Velu conducts inspection: In view of the budget report to be presented in the Assembly on Tuesday, Public Works Minister E.V. Velu inspected the assembly hall on Monday. He inspected all arrangements, including seats, tables, and microphones. Higher Education Minister K.V. Chezhiyan was present during the inspection.
Tamil Nadu Ranks First in Manufacturing Employment – Economic Survey Report
According to the Economic Survey report, Tamil Nadu ranks first in the country in manufacturing employment.
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Monday released the Tamil Nadu Economic Survey for 2025-26, prepared by the State Planning Commission.
The event, held at the Secretariat, was attended by Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu, Chief Secretary N. Muruganantham, State Planning Commission Acting Vice Chairman J. Jayarajan, Additional Chief Secretary T. Udhayachandran, Planning and Development Secretary Sajjan Singh R. Chavan, and others.
Regarding the Economic Survey, State Planning Committee Vice Chairman Jayarajan told reporters: Tamil Nadu’s growth rate is expected to be higher than the national average economic growth rate (7.4%) released by the central government.
Tamil Nadu’s economic growth was 11.2 percent in the previous financial year, 2024-25, but it is projected to reach double-digit growth in the current financial year as well.
Tamil Nadu ranks first among all states, contributing 15 percent to the country’s total manufacturing employment. The report confirms that Tamil Nadu is ahead of states like Gujarat (13%) and Maharashtra (13%).
While the country’s manufacturing sector growth is 4.5 percent, Tamil Nadu’s manufacturing sector growth has tripled to 14.7 percent. Significantly, Tamil Nadu alone contributes 41 percent of the country’s electronics exports.
This year’s report includes a separate chapter on women’s employment and economic participation.
He said the report’s highlights include new plans for developing Tamil Nadu’s maritime economy, which has a 1,076 km coastline, and the goal of achieving a $1 trillion economy by 2030.

According to the Economic Survey, Tamil Nadu’s economic growth is 11.19 percent, almost double the national average growth rate.

The Economic Survey further states: Per capita income in Tamil Nadu has increased to ₹3.62 lakh crore, 1.77 times the national average. The manufacturing sector has registered a growth rate of 14.74 percent, three times the national average of 4.5 percent.
Tamil Nadu ranks first among all states, contributing 15 percent to the country’s total manufacturing employment. ₹1.57 lakh crore has been spent on education, health, and social welfare schemes.
With labor force participation increasing to 72.1 percent, unemployment has decreased to 3.5 percent. Tamil Nadu has set a target of becoming a trillion-dollar economy.
