Bhaichung Bhutia To Merge Hamro Sikkim Party With Sikkim Democratic Front

Sikkim: Footballer-turned politician Bhaichung Bhutia is all set to merge his party Hamro Sikkim (HS) with Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF), the main opposition party of the state. The announcement was made by the former Indian captain on Wednesday (September 13), thus, putting an end to a week-long speculation about the future of his political career and his party. Football legend Bhutia is currently serving as the president of the Hamro Sikkim party, which was founded in 2018.

After unsuccessfully contesting the 2019 elections, Bhutia said that while he is sure of merging Hamro Sikkim with the main opposition party of the state, he has to consult the other party leaders to decide upon the date. The decision comes at a crucial time as the state is gearing up for assembly elections to be held in April next year. “There are still some leaders to meet and the merger of two parties will not happen immediately, it will take time. I have not fixed a date to join SDF or merge yet, that will happen after a thorough discussion,” said Bhutia.

Bhutia said that he has chosen the SDF above others for the purpose of merger as “SDF has cleansed itself of corruption.” He asserted that in the last four years, only the SDF was vocal about the issues of the state. “SDF is the only party that has spoken for Sikkim, their call for Save Sikkim is evidence of the same. Bhaichung and SDF will be like Messi and Argentina to win the World Cup,” said Bhutia.

Bhutia was elected as the president of Hamro Sikkim Party in September last year, as the party decided to take on the ruling dispensation of the state. However, Bhutia has served as the face of the party since 2018. In the 2019 elections, Bhutia along with Hamro Sikkim party had extended support to the Sikkim Kranti Morcha (SKM) led by current chief minister Prem Singh Tamang.

Bhutia has himself asserted that the party had tactically fielded candidates in constituencies where the SKM was weaker. “We were all in support of Parivartan’s promise made by Prem Singh Golay in 2019. We had tactically fielded candidates where the SKM had weaker candidates in constituencies. We wanted the Parivartan as much as SKM did. However, in these 4 years, the Parivartan has failed under Golay and SKM. They are now full of corrupt leaders and businessmen who in the past ruined 25 years ruling SDF party,” claimed Bhutia.
