Big statement in Assam politics: AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal targets Congress

Assam: Amidst the political turmoil in Assam, All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) President Maulana Badruddin Ajmal has launched a scathing attack on the Congress party. He said that the Congress has lost its political identity in the state and is now like the Muslim League.

Reacting to the ongoing political developments in the state, Ajmal categorically stated, “Congress is finished in Assam. It has become the Muslim League.” His statement has sparked a new debate in the state’s politics. Ajmal’s statement comes at a time when the political situation in Assam is constantly changing and various parties are trying to strengthen their positions.

Meanwhile, Badruddin Ajmal himself returned to active politics and won the Binnakandi seat. He defeated Assam Jatiya Parishad candidate Rezaul Karim Chowdhury by a margin of 35,380 votes. Ajmal received a total of 119,721 votes, while his opponent received 84,341 votes. On the ruling coalition’s side, Asom Gana Parishad’s Shahabuddin Majumdar, who received 20,955 votes, came in third.

This victory is considered significant for Ajmal as it marks his return to state politics after his defeat in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. He previously lost the Dhubri Lok Sabha seat to Congress leader Rakibul Hussain. Prior to that defeat, Ajmal had served as a Member of Parliament from Dhubri for three consecutive terms.

The AIUDF chief, after founding the party in 2005, entered politics by winning the South Salmara seat in the 2006 assembly elections. Since then, the party has played an active role in Assamese politics and is particularly considered representative of the Bengali-speaking Muslim community.

However, the AIUDF’s performance in the recent assembly elections was weak, winning only two seats, which is considered its worst performance to date. Despite this, Ajmal’s victory in the Binnakandi seat is being seen as a significant political achievement for the party.

The Binnakandi seat, located in Hojai district, was included in the new constituencies after the 2023 delimitation. By winning this seat, Ajmal has not only made a personal political comeback but also given the party an opportunity to strengthen its base in the new region.

Political analysts believe that both Ajmal’s statement and his victory point to new equations in Assamese politics in the future.
