Cyclone ‘Tithwa’ formed in the Bay of Bengal and is moving towards North Tamil Nadu.

Tamil Nadu: The deep depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining Sri Lanka intensified into Cyclone ‘Tithwa’ on Thursday. The storm is moving towards northern Tamil Nadu.

Due to the storm, a “red” warning for very heavy rainfall has been issued for Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, and Pudukkottai districts on Friday (November 28).

Chennai Meteorological Department Director P. Amudha told reporters on Thursday: The deep depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining southeast Sri Lanka-Indian Ocean areas intensified into a deep depression on Thursday (November 27) morning.

Cyclone Intensifies: It was also located in the same area, about 130 km east-northeast of Hambantota, Sri Lanka, 120 km south-southeast of Batticaloa, Sri Lanka, 640 km south-southeast of Puducherry, and 730 km south-southeast of Chennai.

The deep depression, moving in a north-northwesterly direction, intensified into Cyclone Titwa over the southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining Sri Lanka on Thursday morning.

Towards North Tamil Nadu…: Subsequently, moving in a north-northwesterly direction, it began moving across the southwest Bay of Bengal towards the coasts of Puducherry and adjoining South Andhra Pradesh. Consequently, thunderstorms are expected at many places in South Tamil Nadu, at a few places in North Tamil Nadu, and in Puducherry and Karaikal areas from Friday (November 28) to December 3.

Red alert for 4 districts: A “red” alert has been issued for Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, and Pudukkottai districts as heavy rain is likely at one or two places on Friday (November 28).

Similarly, an “orange” warning has been issued for Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga, Trichy, Ariyalur, and Mayiladuthurai districts as very heavy rain is likely at some places, while a yellow warning has been issued for Thoothukudi, Virudhunagar, Madurai, Perambalur, and Cuddalore districts as heavy rain is likely at one or two places.

Red alert issued for 6 districts tomorrow…: A red alert has been issued for some places in Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Cuddalore, Villupuram, and Chengalpattu districts due to the possibility of heavy rain on Saturday (November 29).

Orange alert for Chennai: An orange alert has been issued for isolated very heavy rainfall in Thanjavur, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Kallakurichi, Tiruvannamalai, Vellore, Ranipet, Kanchipuram, Tiruvallur, and Chennai districts on Saturday. A yellow alert has been issued for isolated heavy rainfall in Pudukkottai, Trichy, Salem, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Tirupattur, Karur, and Namakkal districts.

Following this, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram, and Ranipet districts on Sunday (November 30). The sky will remain partly cloudy in the Chennai suburbs on Friday (November 28). Light rain with thunder and lightning is likely in some parts of the city.

Fishermen’s warning: He said strong winds up to 90 kmph are likely over Tamil Nadu coast, Kumari Sagar, Gulf of Mannar and southwest Bay of Bengal from Friday morning.
