BJD attacks government over devotee’s death during Bahuda Yatra; raises questions about security arrangements.

Bhubaneswar/Puri: The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has launched a scathing attack on the Odisha government over the death of a devotee during the Bahuda Yatra in Puri. The party alleged that this incident exposes the state government and administration’s persistent failure to ensure the smooth conduct of the annual Rath Yatra and the safety of the lakhs of devotees who attend it. The BJD has demanded an impartial inquiry into the matter and urged the government to take effective measures to prevent the recurrence of such incidents in the future.
In a statement issued on Friday, BJD leaders noted that lakhs of devotees from across the country and abroad visit Puri to seek the blessings of Lord Jagannath during the Rath Yatra and the associated Bahuda Yatra. They emphasized that ensuring comprehensive arrangements for security, crowd management, medical facilities, and emergency services during such a massive religious event is the administration’s primary responsibility. The party asserted that the devotee’s death indicates serious lapses in these arrangements.
The BJD alleged that concerns regarding crowd control and devotee safety during the Rath Yatra have frequently been raised in recent years. The party observed that despite the administration gaining experience from the event every year, there is no visible improvement in the necessary preparations. Had adequate security measures and effective crowd management systems been implemented in time, this tragic incident could have been averted.
Party leaders stated that the Rath Yatra is a focal point of faith for crores of devotees, not just in Odisha but across the country and the world. The loss of a devotee’s life during such an event is deeply tragic and a matter of concern. Expressing condolences to the family of the deceased, they demanded that the government provide appropriate assistance to them.
The BJD asked the state government to clarify the number of police personnel, volunteers, and disaster management staff deployed for security during the Bahuda Yatra. Additionally, the party sought details regarding the specific arrangements made for crowd control and emergency medical aid, as well as the speed of the administration’s response at the time of the incident. The party maintains that modern technology, surveillance systems, CCTV cameras, drones, public information systems, and trained security forces should be effectively utilized during major religious events. Furthermore, areas prone to overcrowding should be identified in advance, and additional security and medical facilities should be deployed there to ensure immediate response to any emergency.
Political analysts believe that the presence of lakhs of devotees at events like Puri’s Rath Yatra and Bahuda Yatra poses a significant challenge for the administration. Such events require comprehensive planning regarding crowd control, traffic management, healthcare services, and security arrangements. Any lapse can lead to serious consequences; hence, the opposition frequently questions the government’s preparedness and accountability regarding such incidents.
The BJD stated that instead of merely taking action after an incident occurs, the state government should proactively establish systems that prevent any devotee’s life from being put at risk in the future. The party demanded a detailed inquiry into the incident to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the devotee’s death and insisted that appropriate action be taken against responsible officials if negligence is found at any level.
The party further emphasized that the safety of devotees must be the top priority. The success of religious events is defined not only by the observance of traditions but also by ensuring the safety and convenience of every participating devotee. Therefore, the administration needs to adopt more effective strategies in the future.
Meanwhile, the political debate surrounding this incident has intensified. The BJD is persistently demanding answers from the government and calling for a review of security arrangements. At the same time, devotees and local residents expect security standards to be strengthened for massive events like the Rath Yatra and Bahuda Yatra in the future, enabling lakhs of devotees to practice their faith without fear or inconvenience. All eyes are now fixed on the state government’s response and the measures it will take following this incident.
