KARACHI: Police recovered a bag full of improvised explosive device (IED) from a train at Karachi’s Cantonment railway station, media reports said on Saturday.
Police said that after receiving information about a bomb in Awam Express, the bomb disposal unit reached the station and defused it through a controlled explosion.
According to law enforcement officials, the train was coming from Peshawar to Karachi on Friday and the bomb was hidden under a seat, Geo News reported.
Raja Omar Khattab, a senior official of the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD), said that the sabotage attempt could be made by a separatist group. According to the bomb disposal unit, the explosive was found in a black and red school bag.
Director General of Police (DIG) South Syed Asad Raza said the bomb, which weighed 5 kg, used 2 kg of explosives and was linked to a “timing device”, while a motorcycle battery was used to detonate it. it was done.
The DIG said the probable target was north Sindh, as the time of the bomb was set at 12 noon on Friday and the train was near Sukkur-Rohri Junction at that time.
“Due to a faulty wire inside the bomb, the explosion did not occur at that time,” he said, Geo News reported.
He said that the police was informed about the bomb an hour after the train reached Cantt station, adding that this information was given by the railway staff.
Raza said no case has been registered yet and said it will be registered at the Railway Police Cantt station.
DIG Raza said that CCTV footage of different railway stations from Peshawar to Karachi is being obtained. He said that railway staff are also being investigated.
