In September, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made explosive allegations of “possible” involvement of Indian agents in the killing of Khalistani extremist Hardeep Singh Nijjar on Canadian soil on June 18. India has strongly rejected the allegations.
“The Government rejects allegations of involvement of the Government of India in any acts of violence in Canada. While calling for ‘co-operation’ from India, the Canadian government has not provided us with any specific and relevant information to take action,” Muraleedharan said.
“The Government has conveyed to the Government of Canada its concerns regarding anti-India elements and their activities in Canada and urges Canada to take action against such elements and deny them space,” he said.
“Due to the security environment in Canada and the incitement of violence against our diplomats, the operations of our Consulate in Canada have been disrupted,” Muraleedharan said.
He said India has issued an advisory to all Indian citizens, including students and people traveling to Canada, to exercise extreme caution and avoid traveling to areas and possible places in Canada where such incidents have occurred.
“We have also urged Indian nationals, including students, in Canada to register at our High Commission in Ottawa or Consulates General in Toronto and Vancouver or through the MADAD portal madad.gov.in,” he said.
Muraleedharan said this will enable High Commissions and Consulates General to better connect with Indian citizens in Canada in the event of any “emergency or untoward incident”.
Days after Trudeau’s allegations, India has suspended issuing visas to Canadians. Subsequently, the suspension has been revoked for some categories.
Muraleedharan said, “After a thorough review of the security situation, certain categories of visas are being issued to Canadian citizens through the IVFRT portal from October 26.” Immigration Visa Foreign Registration Tracking (IVFRT) is a platform for online registration of foreigners and related services.
“From November 22, e-Visas including e-Tourist Visa were resumed for Canadian citizens. The government will continue to monitor the security situation in Canada from this perspective,” the minister said.
