Chandigarh: 15 thousand applications for 13 thousand seats of class 11

Chandigarh: Students seeking admission to Class XI in local government schools will face tough competition as the UT education department has received 15,698 (completed) applications for a total of 13,875 seats in various streams. 310 applications were found incomplete.

Total seats 13,875

Applications received (completed) 15,698

9,884 from government school students

5,814 from students from other schools (Chandigarh and outside)

Parents await refund

Many applicants who failed to get a seat in counselling last year are still waiting for refund of admission fees. Officials concerned said the refund is in process and parents have to submit the details to the department. “The refund process is underway. The details of students who approach the DEO office are verified from the respective schools and refund is made accordingly. Reminders have been mailed to the students,” said a department official. A total of 85 per cent (approx) seats in Government Model Senior Secondary Schools (GMSSS) will be allotted to students who have passed Class X exams from local government schools, while 15 per cent (approx) seats will be for students passed out from private schools of the UT and other states. 9,884 students have applied under the 85 per cent quota and 5,815 students under the 15 per cent allocation.

Two merit lists will be released. Vacant seats under reserved categories will be transferred to the general category of the same group. Vacant seats out of the seats allotted to government school passouts will be made available to general category students of private school passouts. The provisional list will be displayed on June 12, followed by objections or online complaints from June 12 to 13. The objections will be redressed on June 14 and the list on school and stream allocation will be displayed on June 21. Verification of documents will be held from June 26 to 29 and classes will begin from July 1. There are a total of 42 government senior secondary schools in the UT. Of these schools, 18 offer science (non-medical), 17 science (medical), 23 commerce, 39 humanities and 23 skilled courses. As per the old policy, a common merit list used to be prepared for all students of government and private schools of Chandigarh, Punjab, Haryana and other states. However, to protect the interests of government school students, division of seats (government school and private school passouts) was introduced last year. In the past, there was a high demand for seats in humanities, especially from students passing out from private schools.
