Chandigarh INLD upset over tax based on collector rates

The Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) has opposed the Haryana Cabinet’s decision to levy property tax based on collector rates. Party National President Abhay Singh Chautala condemned the move, terming it a “Tughlaqi decree” (an arbitrary and irrational diktat).

The leader warned that if the order is not withdrawn, people would be compelled to protest.

Chautala noted that earlier, only a nominal house tax was levied, which was later converted into property tax during the tenure of the Congress government. He alleged that the BJP government has linked property tax to collector rates, thereby imposing an additional financial burden on the public.

He stated that under this new system, taxpayers might have to pay up to five times more tax; as collector rates rise, the property tax will increase in the same proportion.

Furthermore, each floor of a building will be assessed separately, further increasing the tax burden. He remarked that at a time when people are grappling with inflation, the government has decided to “loot” the public.
