Chelsea’s missed chances blamed for 2-1 defeat against Wolves
Wolverhampton: Chelsea head coach Mauricio Pochettino blamed himself for the 2-1 defeat against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League.
Chelsea’s poor season continued as Wolves suffered yet another defeat following their win over the Blues.
Despite having complete possession throughout the 90 minutes, Chelsea were unable to get past Jose Sa. They had chances but failed to maintain their composure to finish off the chances.
Raheem Sterling had the best chance in the first half when he was one-on-one with Jose Sa. He missed his chance and eventually, Wolves took that chance.
“We made a mistake; We need to blame ourselves. That’s why we couldn’t win today, because we had chances to score in the first half. In the Premier League, when you have chances you are not clinical enough, you can always admit,” Pochettino said as quoted by Sky Sports after the game.
“We didn’t compete in the first five minutes of the second half; We gave a lot of corners. In these moments, it’s about competing better and being stronger. I believe that we are our own enemies. I don’t want to take the credit away from Wolves. He scored and did his job. But in the first half, we were the better team. And because of the lack of ability to score, we could not win the game,” Pochettino said.
The Argentina manager lined up Armando Broza alongside Nicolas Jackson, with Raheem Sterling on the wing.
The trio caused a lot of problems for the Wolves defence, but Jackson failed to control the ball on various occasions, Sterling missed his clear chances, and Broza also failed to score when his time came.
Wolves, who enjoyed some good chances, eventually scored with Mario Lemina heading the ball in at Sarabia’s corner.
Chelsea worked hard to equalise, with Pochettino deploying five forwards in front. In injury time Matt Doherty doubled Wolves’ lead by hitting the ball into the back of the net. Chelsea got a consolation goal with the help of Nkunku’s goal and the score became 2-1.
