Chennai CM Vijay reviews Nemmeli desalination plants

Chennai, July 7:
Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on Monday reviewed the functioning of the 110 MLD and 150 MLD desalination plants in Nemmeli, inspecting key facilities such as the intake sump, reverse osmosis (RO) building, and SCADA control room. Chennai currently receives approximately 1,230 million liters of water daily from various lakes and desalination units, which play a vital role in meeting the city’s growing water demand.
The Chief Minister also reviewed the progress of the 400 MLD desalination plant being built in Perur, which is being constructed at a cost of ₹5,814.57 crore. As part of the project, work is underway to lay a 59-km pipeline from Perur to Porur. Upon completion, this facility is expected to benefit approximately 22.67 lakh people in the Chennai and Tambaram Corporations, as well as 20 surrounding panchayats.
Stressing the importance of timely completion, Vijay directed officials to expedite construction and ensure the project is put into public use as soon as possible. He was accompanied during the inspection by Human Resource Management Minister T. Sarathkumar, Additional Chief Secretary Gagandeep Singh Bedi, Metro Water Board Managing Director T. Anand, Chengalpattu District Collector M. Veerapandi, and other senior officials.
