Chennai: As Cyclone Michong continues to wreak havoc in Tamil Nadu, Chennai city is facing massive waterlogging due to heavy rains in the state, while the Coovum river is in spate due to the release of water from nearby lakes.

Cyclone Michong is likely to make landfall today on the south coast of Andhra Pradesh between Nellore and Machilipatnam.
As the cyclone moves away from Tamil Nadu, people were seen walking on waterlogged roads to buy essential items.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said, “Severe Cyclonic Storm “Michong” moved northwards with a speed of 07 kmph over south Andhra Pradesh, west-central Bay of Bengal and adjoining north Tamil Nadu coasts during the last 6 hours. Moved towards and centered at 05:30 hrs IST today, 5 December 2023 over west central Bay of Bengal off south Andhra Pradesh coast near latitude 14.9°N and longitude 80.2°E, about 20 km east of Kavali. 50 km north-northeast of Nellore, 200 km north of Chennai, 110 km south-southwest of Bapatla and 170 km south-southwest of Machilipatnam.”

It further said that Cyclone ‘Maichong’ is likely to cross South Andhra Pradesh during the afternoon of December 5 with maximum wind speed of 90-100 kmph.
“As the system is moving almost northwards close to the coast, parts of the wall cloud area are located over land. The system is moving almost parallel to the north and close to the South Andhra Pradesh coast and between Nellore and the South Andhra Pradesh coast. It is likely to cross the IMD as a severe cyclonic storm near Machilipatnam, Bapatla during the afternoon of December 5, with maximum speed ranging from 90-100 kmph gusting to 110 kmph, the IMD said.
The IMD said that as the system is moving northwards closer to the coast, some part of the wall cloud area lies over land.
Farms were inundated in many parts of Machilipatnam in Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh due to rain and waterlogging due to the impact of severe cyclonic storm Michong.
Cyclonic storm Michong is likely to make landfall today near Bapatla on the south coast of the state, between Nellore and Machilipatnam, causing moderate rainfall along with gusty winds in Bapatla.
