Chennai: Residents demand proper maintenance of Kancheepuram’s Elango Park

Chennai: Residents of Vedashachalam Nagar in Kancheepuram have demanded proper maintenance of the public park in the area. Residents say that Elango Park, which was supposed to be a green space for children and adults, has now become a garbage dump and is filled with waste, causing foul smell. The public park is located in the 44th ward on Elango Street in Kancheepuram. The park was once used by hundreds of people, especially adults, for their regular jogging. However, the condition of the park has deteriorated further now as the trees inside have not been pruned and many branches hang dangerously. Locals fear that these may fall and hurt children or elderly people visiting the park.
“Our children have stopped playing there. Even pedestrians feel unsafe. This park has become a danger instead of a place of entertainment,” said Ramya, a resident. The residents said that we have submitted a petition to the Kancheepuram Corporation Commissioner and demanded immediate cleaning of the park, proper garbage disposal and pruning of trees to avoid accidents. They have also urged the corporation to take up regular maintenance measures so that the park remains usable for the public. A Kancheepuram Corporation official said that cleaning of the park and pruning of tree branches is planned and the work will begin soon. “The public will be able to spend a good time in the park like before,” the official said. The residents have submitted a petition to the Kancheepuram Corporation Commissioner and demanded immediate cleaning of the park, proper garbage disposal and pruning of trees to make it a safe place again.
