Chennai: Unidentified thieves made off with 2 kg of silver ornaments worth Rs 8 lakh from the Naya Tirupati Perumal temple in Maduranthagam on Wednesday. The temple, located in Chitravadi village on the Maduranthagam-Pavunjur road, is known for conducting special abhishekams, pujas, and festivals with great pomp and ceremony. The temple priest resides within the temple premises. Security personnel are usually on duty both day and night to guard the temple.
Police said that two unidentified individuals entered the temple around midnight, breaking the locks on the doors. They stole silver crowns from the idols of Perumal, Sridevi, and Bhudevi, a silver chain from Perumal, and other puja articles. In total, approximately 2 kg of silver items were stolen. When the priest arrived to open the temple on Wednesday morning, he was shocked to discover the theft and immediately informed the Chithamoor police station. A police team arrived at the scene, registered a case, and is now reviewing CCTV footage from the surrounding areas to identify the thieves.
