Chennai’s historic tree falls in summer rain

Chennai, May 9:

As the summer rains intensify in Tamil Nadu, Chennai residents have been experiencing early morning showers accompanied by strong winds for the past two days, bringing temporary relief from the scorching heat.

In a dramatic incident this morning, a 100-year-old peepal tree inside the Alayamman Temple complex near the Teynampet signal was uprooted by strong winds and fell onto the road.
Officials from the Electricity Board, Police Department, and Greater Chennai Corporation arrived at the scene and are currently working to remove the fallen tree and restore normal traffic in the area.

The large tree reportedly damaged a portion of the temple wall and a nearby streetlight. Fortunately, no pedestrians or vehicles were present at the time, averting a major accident.
The incident highlights the impact of sudden weather changes and strong winds that are currently affecting many parts of Chennai during the ongoing summer rains, prompting authorities to remain alert for similar hazards.
