Civil issues unresolved in rural areas in Amritsar

Punjab: When it comes to solving sanitation problems and ensuring development in rural areas or peripheral cities, hardly any political party takes the problems seriously, leave alone solving them. Even political leaders never go to rural areas to know the plight of the people.

Most of the link roads in Amritsar district are in a deplorable condition. Residents of border villages and small towns claim that the previous Congress government and now the AAP government have neglected the Amritsar areas as they have focused on the Malwa region.

Many roads rebuilt during the SAD-BJP regime are now in urgent need of repair. Road projects sanctioned during the Congress rule have not yet been completed. PWD Minister Harbhajan Singh ETO had announced re-carpeting of some link roads a few months ago, but the projects have not started yet.
Many roads in Majitha assembly constituency are in a bad condition. Re-carpeting of the main road is still incomplete. The road outside the residence of AAP leader and civic in-charge Lali Majithia has been incomplete for the last two years. Commuters face inconvenience as stones scattered on the road are hindering the smooth movement of vehicles. Sanitation is another major issue troubling the residents of various towns. There is no proper collection of waste by local councils.

“Politicians never tire of making tall claims of development but the parties they are associated with are no longer in power. Most of the villages and towns are deprived of basic facilities. Rural roads are full of potholes and passengers have to experience a bumpy ride. PWD and Mandi Board do not have funds to do the patchwork,” said Ravinder Singh, a resident of Majitha.
“The Akali government had rebuilt the roads. After that the Captain (Amarinder) government ignored civilian issues and now the AAP regime is ignoring the border areas. MLAs are not able to arrange funds for development. There is no infrastructure for solid waste management in small towns and villages,” said Gurpreet, another resident.
