Claims of drone downing and airstrikes escalate tensions amid Iran-US tensions
Tehran: Tensions between Iran and the United States have escalated once again after the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed to have shot down an American MQ-1 drone on Sunday.
According to an IRGC statement, the drone entered Iranian waters with the intention of carrying out “hostile operations.” As soon as the drone crossed the border, Iran’s air defense system tracked it and shot it down with a missile. This incident was described as a swift action by security forces.
Earlier on Tuesday, the IRGC claimed that it had the “rightful and unwavering” right to respond to any ceasefire violation. At the same time, the Iranian military also claimed to have shot down an American MQ-9 drone. These repeated claims have further escalated tensions in the region.
Local media reports also said that the IRGC fired on a fighter jet that entered Iranian airspace. This incident occurred at a time when the US had announced plans to launch new “self-defense strikes” against Iran.
On the other hand, the United States Central Command (CENTCOM) issued a statement stating that US forces targeted missile launch sites and mine-laden boats in southern Iran on Monday. According to CENTCOM, this action was taken in self-defense to ensure the safety of US troops.
CENTCOM spokesman Tim Hawkins stated that US forces conducted “self-defense strikes” in southern Iran, aimed at reducing the threat posed by Iranian forces. He added that this action was taken with the safety of US troops in mind.
These incidents have further escalated the situation in West Asia, with claims and counter-claims from both countries. Tensions in the region are rising due to allegations of drone attacks, missile strikes, and airspace violations.
