College student’s father commits suicide after student tries to force amulet on him

Tamil Nadu: The father of a college student involved in the amulet-tying incident committed suicide in Thiruvidaimarudur. Following this, they refused to accept his body and blocked the road on Thursday.
Balaji (48) is a laborer from Kurichimalai, near Thiruvidaimarudur in Thanjavur district. His son, Balakrishnan (21), was a third-year undergraduate at Kumbakonam College. Recently, the Kumbakonam West Police Station arrested Balakrishnan and sent him to jail following a complaint of assaulting a college student in Kumbakonam who refused to wear an amulet. Balakrishnan had returned to Kurichimalai on bail on Wednesday. Meanwhile, the student’s father, Balaji, suddenly committed suicide by hanging himself at his home on Wednesday night. Upon receiving information, Thiruvidaimarudur police arrived, recovered the body, and handed it over to the Thiruvidaimarudur Government Hospital for a post-mortem examination. Upon learning of this, Balaji’s relatives on Thursday refused to accept the body and blocked the road, demanding that a case be filed against those responsible for the suicide. Reassured by the police, the protesters ended their protest and took the body for burial. The talks were attended by Advocate S. Vivekanandan, Secretary of the VVIP State Election Division, District Secretary A.C. Panneerselvam, the Chief Minister, and others.
