Concern increased due to sea erosion in Ganjam district, danger signs on Aryapalli coast, fear among villagers.

Odisha: The problem of sea erosion is becoming increasingly serious in Ganjam district. Following the alarming situation in the Podampeta area, similar erosion is now being observed at Aryapalli beach near Chhatrapur, creating fear among locals. According to villagers, the sea is gradually advancing towards the settlements, and coastal land is rapidly eroding in many locations.

Locals report that the sea has now come much closer than before, in some places only 50 meters away. This situation has increased the anxiety of those living nearby. Residents say that if the continuous rainfall and sea turbulence continue, the situation could worsen and pose a direct threat to the settlements.

Around 3,000 fishermen and members of other communities live in the Aryapalli Panchayat, whose livelihoods depend primarily on the sea. Consequently, sea erosion poses a significant threat not only to their homes but also to their daily lives and livelihoods. Villagers stated that they have long been demanding permanent measures from the government to protect the coastline, including the construction of protective walls and stone pillars, but no concrete action has been taken.

Recognizing the increasing severity of sea erosion, Chhatrapur MLA Krishna Chandra Nayak visited Aryapalli. He visited the site to assess the situation and inspect the affected areas. The MLA spoke with local residents, listened to their problems, and assessed the actual extent of sea erosion.

The villagers told the MLA that if permanent protection measures are not implemented in time, many homes and land could be submerged in the sea in the coming years. They also stated that the situation worsens every year during the monsoon season, but the problem persists due to the lack of a permanent solution.

Acknowledging the severity of the situation, the MLA said that the issue will be raised with the relevant departments to develop an effective coastal protection plan. He assured that a report on the areas affected by sea erosion will be prepared and sent to the government so that necessary action can be taken.

According to experts, sea erosion is a serious environmental problem for coastal areas, exacerbated by both natural and human causes. Incessant rainfall, the intensity of sea waves, and a lack of coastal management are considered the main causes. Areas like Aryapalli, home to a large fishing community, are the most affected by this problem.

Local residents say that if strong walls and other structural measures for coastal protection are not implemented soon, they may be forced to abandon their homes and villages. This situation has created an atmosphere of uncertainty and fear throughout the region.

Overall, the sea erosion situation in Aryapalli is becoming increasingly serious, and the local administration and government face a major challenge in taking quick and effective steps to stop it.
