Congress team meets family of rape and murder victim in Bhadrak
Bhadrak: The Congress party on Saturday blamed the rampant circulation of drugs and alcohol in Odisha as the main reason behind the rising crime rate against women and girls.
Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) President Bhakta Charan Das made this statement after meeting the family of a 10-year-old girl who was allegedly raped and murdered in Chandbali, Bhadrak district. Das told reporters, “I met the grieving family of the little girl who was brutally raped and murdered in Chandbali, Bhadrak district. I demand the strictest punishment for the culprit and adequate compensation for the family. Justice should not be delayed, undermined, or denied. This heinous crime requires strict and exemplary action.”
He demanded compensation of at least ₹50 lakh for the girl’s family. In a post on X, Das said, “I express my deepest condolences. We strongly condemn this brutal crime, which has been fueled by the government’s failure to curb the rampant drug and alcohol abuse. Over 1,500 such cases have been reported in the last 10 months, so there is a need for strict laws, fast-track courts, and severe punishment for the guilty.”
He said the BJP government must stop the widespread circulation of drugs, alcohol, and other intoxicants, which are ruining the youth of society.
Das told reporters, “Most crimes are being committed because of these substances. Imagine how a 10-year-old girl was raped and murdered. This is a heinous crime.”
On Tuesday, the body of a Class 3 student was found near a bush in Baligaon, under the Chandbali police station area. A man was arrested in connection with the incident, and an angry mob destroyed his house.
The BJD and the Congress have demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, who is also in charge of the Home Department.
