CRPF jawan arrested for smoking beedi inside flight
Bengaluru: A Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawan has been arrested for smoking beedi inside an IndiGo flight. The matter is of Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) in Bengaluru. It is alleged that the 37-year-old CRPF jawan was smoking beedi in the toilet of Kolkata-Bengaluru Indigo flight.
The accused has been identified as CRPF head constable Karunakaran J, posted in Jharkhand. Karunakaran was arrested after Puneeth B M, duty manager of InterGlobe Aviation Limited, lodged a complaint against him with the airport police. According to the complaint, Karunakaran was aboard IndiGo flight 6E-487 that departed from Kolkata’s Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport at 9.30 pm on September 3.
According to the Indian Express report, he had used the toilet of the plane. The cabin crew reportedly smelled burning coming from around the toilet. When Karunakaran came out of the toilet, the team went inside and inspected him and found evidence of smoking beedi. The complaint states that they also found a matchbox from Karunakaran.
As a result, the flight captain considered Karunakaran an unruly passenger and after landing at the airport he was detained by security officials and a formal police complaint was filed. A senior police officer said Karunakaran cited health concerns for his action. He was going to Bengaluru for medical treatment. A case was registered against Karunakaran under Indian Penal Code section 336 (endangering life or personal safety of others) as well as aircraft rules.
