Cyclone in Bay of Bengal, heavy rain in Odisha
Bhubaneswar: A cyclone in the Bay of Bengal is likely to make landfall in southern India, with rain likely in Odisha from December 3, 2023. The depression over Southeast and adjoining Southwest Bay of Bengal has moved northwestwards at a speed of 10 kmph during the last three hours.
It is likely to move west-northwestwards, intensify into a deep depression by 2nd and intensify into a cyclonic storm over the south-west Bay of Bengal around 3rd December. After this it will proceed
Move northwestwards and cross South Andhra Pradesh and adjoining North Tamil Nadu coasts between Chennai and Machilipatnam as a cyclone in the Bay of Bengal around the evening of 4 December.

On December 3:
Light to moderate rain/thundershowers very likely at one or two places over remaining districts of Coastal Odisha, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Boudh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjmat districts. Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj.
On 4th December:
Light to moderate rain/thundershowers very likely at many places over Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Kandhamal, Puri districts, rest districts of Coastal Odisha, Navrangpur, Kalahandi, Boudh and some places. At one or two places in the remaining districts of Odisha.
Yellow Warning – Heavy rainfall (7 to 11 cm) likely at one or two places over Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati and Ganjam districts.
On 5 December:
Light to moderate rain/thundershowers very likely at many places over South Coastal Odisha, Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Kandhamal, Nabarangapur districts and rest of South Interior Odisha, some places over North Coastal Odisha. Location in the districts of North Interior Odisha.
Orange warning – Heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20 cm) likely at one or two places over Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati and Ganjam districts.
Yellow Warning – Heavy rainfall (7 to 11 cm) likely at one or two places in Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nayagarh, Khordha and Puri districts.
Impact and suggested action (for warning districts):
- There is a possibility of some damage to standing crops and vegetables.
- There is a possibility of temporary water logging and some damage to kutcha roads and collapse of walls of kutcha houses.
- Harvesting of mature paddy, ragi, millet and other crops, horticultural crops and vegetables can be completed by December 3 and the harvested crop can be kept in a safe place.
- Living in weak mud houses can be avoided.
