Delhi Opposition MPs, including Rahul Gandhi, met the Speaker.
New Delhi: Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, met Speaker Om Birla on Tuesday along with other opposition MPs and demanded a detailed discussion in Parliament regarding the NEET-UG paper leak issue and the violent protest at Jantar Mantar.
Gandhi posted on X, “Met the Lok Sabha Speaker today along with opposition MPs. Our demand is clear: there must be a detailed discussion in Parliament regarding the brutality faced by students yesterday and the government’s lack of accountability for the examination crisis.” Referring to the violent clashes between CJP supporters and security personnel during the ‘Sansad Chalo’ (March to Parliament) protest on Monday, the Leader of the Opposition said, “Students were beaten for asking legitimate questions about their future. If Parliament cannot discuss the future of India’s youth, then what is it for?”
He added, “The opposition will not let this be suppressed. We will ensure that the students’ voices are heard both on the streets and in Parliament.”
Meanwhile, Lok Sabha proceedings had to be adjourned for the second time on Tuesday as the House’s functioning was disrupted by continuous slogan-shouting and protests from opposition members during the Monsoon Session.
Sandhya Ray, who was presiding over the House, announced the adjournment after repeated appeals to opposition members to maintain order went unheeded.
Despite multiple appeals from the Chair, opposition members continued to shout slogans, forcing another adjournment of the House.
This marked the second adjournment of the Lok Sabha on Tuesday. Earlier in the day, Speaker Om Birla had adjourned the House until the afternoon after repeated disruptions prevented normal proceedings.
Appealing to members to allow the House to function, Birla said, “Do you not want the House to run?… Everyone will get a chance to speak.”
However, opposition members persisted with their protests and slogan-shouting, disrupting proceedings once again and ultimately forcing a second adjournment.
Before the day’s parliamentary proceedings began, leaders of the INDIA bloc held a meeting to formulate their strategy for the day’s business. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, NCP (SP) MP Supriya Sule, and several other opposition leaders attended this meeting.
These disruptions mirror those witnessed on Monday—the first day of the Monsoon Session—when the functioning of both Houses of Parliament was affected by repeated adjournments.
Opposition parties staged protests demanding discussions on various issues—including the exam paper leak scandal and the protest held at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar under the banner of the ‘Cockroach Janata Party’—leading to frequent disruptions in parliamentary proceedings.
