Demand for a separate law to prevent honor killings; call for action following the K.N. Pasha Commission report.

Tamil Nadu Tamil Nadu: The demand for making a law to stop the incidents of honor killing has once again intensified. ‘Liberation Tigers of Tamil Nadu’ leader Tholam Thirumavalavan has said that K.N. The state government should immediately bring a separate law as soon as the Pasha Commission report is received. Describing this issue as a serious social problem, he has appealed to take immediate action.

In a statement issued by the organization on Sunday, it was said that the increase in incidents of honor killing in the southern districts of Tamil Nadu is a matter of concern. The statement said that such incidents happening in the name of caste are a threat to the society and strict legal system is necessary to stop them. The organization also said that it has been their demand for a long time that a special law should be made to stop such incidents.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court of India has from time to time advised the Central and State Governments to enact laws to stop honor killings. However, the organization’s statement also said that despite this, till now the Central Government and most of the state governments have not implemented any concrete law in this direction, due to which there remains concern on this issue.

In November last year, the then Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam government had constituted a commission to study measures to prevent honor killings. This commission is headed by retired judge K.N. Was handed over to Pasha. The commission was given the responsibility to study the situation of such incidents in the state and prepare a report.

The statement said that K.N. The report of the Pasha Commission has not yet been presented to the government. Questions have also been raised regarding this delay and a demand has been made to make the report public as soon as possible, so that the process of law making can move forward on its basis.

Tholam Thirumavalavan said that incidents like honor killings are not just individual crimes but a serious problem related to social structure and caste discrimination. Therefore, to stop this, administrative steps alone are not enough, but a strong legal framework is necessary.

He appealed to the government to start the process of making a law immediately after receiving the report without any delay, so that such incidents can be stopped in future and the victims’ families can get justice.
