Dhordo village got the title of ‘Best Tourism Village’ of UNWTO

Kutch (ANI): Recognizing Dhordo’s outstanding contribution to sustainable tourism, cultural preservation and rural development, the village in Gujarat’s Kutch district has been awarded the title of ‘Best Tourist Village’ by the United Nations World Organization for Tourism (UNWTO). Dhordo is a sleepy village nestled in the vast expanse of the Great Rann of Kutch, and is globally acclaimed for hosting the annual Rann Utsav. This vibrant cultural festival serves as a grand platform to showcase the traditional arts, music and crafts of the region. Tourists from all over the world get a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the local culture against the stunning backdrop of the Rann of Kutch.
Dhordo being recognized as the ‘Best Tourist City’ has a far-reaching impact on the economy of the region. Rann Utsav, the annual festival held in Dhordo, has given a great boost to the local economy. In FY 2022-23, the event contributed Rs 468 crore to GST revenue. The festival attracted over 98,000 Indian tourists and 7,400 international tourists, further underscoring its importance as a major tourist destination.
The local Dhordo community played an important role in the transformation of the village. Their active involvement in cultural preservation, traditional crafts and hospitality services ensures that tourists have an authentic experience while also contributing to the local economy.

The Gujarat government recognized the potential of Dhordo and started the annual Rann Utsav.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed happiness over recognition of Dhordo by UNWTO. They shared their excitement on social media, celebrating the rich cultural heritage and natural beauty of Dhordo. He invited people to share their memories and experiences in Dhordo, hoping to inspire more people to visit this remarkable city.
The UNWTO Best Tourist Village Award is a prestigious recognition that honors villages for their notable achievements in various fields.
These include rural development, conservation of their original landscapes, promotion of cultural heritage and diversity, as well as protection of local culinary values and traditions.
The assessment process, which is based on nine key criteria covering economic, social and environmental sustainability, cultural and natural resources and value chain integration, identifies and celebrates these exceptional rural tourism destinations.
