DMK’s Election Symbol and MDMK’s Candidates

Tamil Nadu: During the 2006 elections, an unusual incident occurred in the Tenkasi Assembly constituency, where a DMK candidate campaigned for votes on behalf of an MDMK candidate.
Typically, during elections, it is intriguing to observe that multiple candidates bearing the same name as the main party’s nominee file their papers, thereby creating a situation of confusion. A similar incident unfolded in the Tenkasi constituency in 2006. In this instance, V. Karuppasamy Pandian—the then District Secretary—contested the election on behalf of the DMK-led alliance, utilizing the ‘Rising Sun’ (Udayasurya) election symbol; meanwhile, Rama Udayasurya contested on behalf of the MDMK—a constituent of the AIADMK-led alliance—using the ‘Spinning Top’ (Pambaram) symbol.
Consequently, when V. Karuppasamy Pandian campaigned, urging voters to cast their ballots for ‘Udayasurya,’ his appeal served as a reference not only to his own party’s election symbol but also to the name of his opposing candidate. In that election, V. Karuppasamy Pandian emerged victorious, securing 69,755 votes, while Rama Udayasurya received 51,097 votes.
