Drunken motorcycle driver hits couple, wife suffers serious injuries

Mumbai: A woman was seriously injured when a drunk motorcyclist hit her bike, while her husband had a narrow escape. Nagpada police said, the accused Balaji Ganesan, 21, has been arrested.

The accident occurred on Thursday night when Umar Farooq Khadim and his wife Faridi, both aged 34, were returning after having dinner outside. At around 11.30 pm, they reached near Mumbai Central Post Office at Nagpada Junction on Bellasis Road. Khadim slowed down the car as there was a speed breaker ahead. In an instant, the Pydhoni-based pair were knocked down by Ganesan.

Recalling the horror, Khadim said that everything happened so quickly. When he was finally able to collect himself, he saw his Faridi lying on the ground. “My wife was bleeding, I was lying on the other side and my bike was somewhere else. Another motorcycle, Bajaj Pulsar, which hit us was also on the ground and its two occupants were also on the ground,” said Khadim, who suffered minor injuries on his knees and legs.

After this, the local people gathered and caught Ganesan. Khadim told that when he went near him, he smelled of alcohol and he was mumbling that he was a resident of Goregaon. Police took the couple to Nair Hospital, while Faridi continued vomiting due to severe head injury. He had to be shifted to Saifee Hospital. Doctors informed the couple that the woman needed immediate surgery as she had suffered major internal injuries on the back of her head and skull, while her spinal cord was also damaged.
