Electoral upset in Barpeta seat, Congress candidate’s nomination cancelled

Assam: In a significant development ahead of the Assam Assembly elections, the Barpeta seat appears to be tilting in favor of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) after the nomination of Mahanand Sarkar of the Indian National Congress was rejected by the Election Commission of India.

The final decision was announced after a final hearing at the Barpeta Deputy Commissioner’s office. Mahanand Sarkar’s nomination was cancelled due to discrepancies in Form A.

With this cancellation, Deepak Kumar Das of the AGP is the only major party candidate left in the fray, significantly strengthening the party’s position in the seat.

However, the contest is not entirely without competition, as the nominations of several independent candidates, including Uddhav Chandra Das and Gagan Chandra Haloi, have been accepted and remain in the race.

The rejection of the Congress candidate’s nomination has changed the electoral atmosphere in Barpeta, with political experts saying the absence of a major opposition candidate could give the AGP a decisive edge unless independent candidates manage to consolidate votes on the ground.
