Electricity network in Indore to go underground.

Indore. Indore, the commercial capital of Madhya Pradesh, is preparing for a major overhaul of its electricity infrastructure. Plans are underway to replace the city’s long-standing overhead power lines with a modern underground cabling network. The project aims to provide the city with a safer, more reliable, and smarter power supply system.

This plan is being formulated under the Union Ministry of Power’s initiative to strengthen urban power systems. Upon completion of the proposed project, Indore’s power distribution network will be equipped with modern technology, digital monitoring systems, and improved fault management capabilities. This will help minimize power supply disruptions and ensure consistently better service for consumers.

According to a senior official from the Energy Department, Indore has been included among the priority cities in the state’s power modernization program. Upgrading the existing system is deemed essential given the city’s growing population, rapid urban expansion, and rising electricity demand. Officials state that the primary objective of the project is to create a more robust and secure power distribution system that meets future requirements.

Under the proposed plan, existing 11 kV High Tension (HT) and 400-volt Low Tension (LT) overhead power lines across most areas of Indore will be shifted underground in a phased manner. To achieve this, a modern underground cable network will be developed across various parts of the city. The work will be executed in stages to ensure the power supply remains uninterrupted.

Several benefits are associated with the underground cabling system. A major advantage will be the reduction in power line failures caused by strong winds, rain, storms, and other natural factors. Currently, the power system—reliant on open wires and poles—frequently faces issues like line breakage or faults due to weather conditions. Underground cabling will help mitigate such problems significantly.

Additionally, the project will reduce the clutter of utility poles and overhead wires along city roads, in market areas, and in residential neighborhoods. This will enhance the city’s aesthetic appeal and also benefit traffic management. This project is considered a crucial component of urban development for Indore as it advances towards becoming a ‘Smart City.’

According to officials, the new system will utilize digital monitoring and modern technology. This will enable power distribution companies to quickly detect faults and resolve issues in less time. The smart system will facilitate more effective fault identification and power supply monitoring.

The project is also expected to benefit electricity consumers. A reduction in frequent power outages, voltage fluctuations, and technical glitches is anticipated. Furthermore, industrial areas, commercial establishments, and residential consumers will receive a more stable power supply.

Electricity demand is steadily rising in a rapidly developing city like Indore. The expansion of new residential areas, industries, the IT sector, and commercial activities has placed increased pressure on the power distribution system. Consequently, upgrading the aging infrastructure with modern technology is seen as the need of the hour.

However, implementing such a massive project will not be easy. Challenges such as road excavation for laying underground cables, traffic management, and coordination among various departments will arise. The electricity department and the administration will need to devise a phased plan that addresses all these aspects.

Officials state that special care will be taken to minimize inconvenience to the public during the project’s implementation. Alternative arrangements will also be put in place to maintain the power supply while the work is underway.

Indore is already among the country’s leading cities in terms of cleanliness and urban development. Now, this plan to modernize the power infrastructure could prove to be a significant step towards establishing a smart and secure energy system for the city.

If the project is completed according to plan, Indore’s power network will become more robust, secure, and technology-driven in the coming years. Underground cabling will not only ensure a better power supply for the city but also help meet future energy demands.
