Evacuate people living in rain-affected areas, Stalin tells collectors

Chennai: In the wake of Cyclonic Storm Michong, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Sunday urged district collectors to provide shelter to people living in low-lying areas and rain-affected areas in relief camps.

After reviewing the precautionary measures at the State Emergency Operations Center at Ezhilagam complex here, Stalin said, “All district collectors and other officials have been advised to evacuate the public from low-lying areas and rain-affected areas in advance. “The areas should be quickly evacuated to relief camps. People should avoid coming out of their homes/shelters unnecessarily for their safety.”

“23 teams of Disaster Response Force are on standby. 14 teams of 350 personnel of SDRF and 9 teams of 225 personnel of NDRF have been rushed to the coastal districts of the state to carry out restoration and relief operations. 121 multi-purpose shelters and 4,967 Other relief camps have been kept ready with all basic facilities. Through 437 precautionary systems set up in coastal areas, warning information is being provided to fishermen and the public. Actions have also been taken to send warning messages to the public ,” Stalin explained while addressing journalists.

Furthermore, Stalin said that State Emergency Operation Centers and District Level Emergency Operation Centers are working round the clock with additional manpower.

“Surveillance officers appointed for Chennai metropolitan areas are deployed in their respective areas and taking precautionary measures. Due to timely warning given to fishermen, 930 boats on the east coast have come ashore safely. Moreover, “57 boats have been safely berthed at Krishnampattinam, Juvalathin and Ramaiah Pattinam fishing ports. 403 boats are safe on the west coast,” Stalin said.

Ministers KKSSR Ramachandran, KN Nehru and other officials were present during the review meeting.
