Fake chemist arrested, police made big revelation

New Delhi: Delhi Police has arrested a fake chemist, who sent more than 40 people for surgery at Agarwal Medical Center located in Greater Kailash Part-1 in South Delhi. Investigations have revealed that ‘doctors’ at the hospital performed medical procedures on patients without the required degree or authorisation. The accused has been identified as Zulfikar (42), a resident of Prahladpur, who ran a shop named Clinic-cum-Medicine in Sangam Vihar. Police said that Zulfikar used to sell homeopathy and allopathy medicines without a valid license.
On Tuesday, the police had arrested Neeraj Aggarwal, his wife Pooja Aggarwal, Mahendra (former lab technician) and Jaspreet for making fake surgery notes of surgeries planned by ineligible persons. According to police, eight people died during and after medical procedures, while a female patient lost her uterus at that hospital. On questioning, Zulfikar told the police that he contacted Neeraj Aggarwal after his number was written on a card distributed by some boys in Sangam Vihar. DCP (South) Chandan Chaudhary said, “Neeraj Aggarwal used to give 35 percent commission to Zulfikar for every patient referred by him. Zulfikar had referred patients requiring operations like removal of stones or delivery to Agarwal’s clinic.”

The payment from Aggarwal to Zulfiqar was made through the phone transaction app linked to his mobile number. The DCP said, “His business was going on for about 5-6 years. The new patient referred was Asghar Ali, who unfortunately died during treatment.” “The post-mortem report of Asghar Ali lists the cause of death as hemorrhagic shock due to complications of laparoscopic cholecystectomy,” the official said. In all, Zulfikar referred about 40 to 50 patients to Agarwal for various treatments including delivery, abortion and operation for stones. “Agarwal usually charged Rs 15,000 to 20,000 for delivery and stone operations and Rs 5,000 to 6,000 for abortion,” Choudhary said.

According to the police, on October 10, 2022, a woman from Sangam Vihar lodged a complaint that her husband had got gallstones removed at Aggarwal Medical Center on September 19, 2022. Initially Agarwal claimed that a ‘renowned’ surgeon – Jaspreet Singh – would perform the surgery. However, just before the surgery he was told that Jaspreet Singh would not undergo the operation due to some emergency. The surgery was then done by Mahendra Singh along with Aggarwal and Pooja. The woman said in her complaint that it was later revealed that Mahendra Singh and Pooja were fake doctors.

The complainant said her husband experienced severe pain after the surgery and became unconscious and had to be taken to Safdarjung Hospital, where he was declared brought dead. According to Chaudhary, investigation revealed that Jaspreet Singh was not present during the surgery and Aggarwal had made fake documents. Seven complaints were filed with the Delhi Medical Council against Agarwal Medical Center for causing death of patients due to negligence. On October 27, 2023, another patient Jai Narayan died after surgery. A medical board found deficiencies at the medical centre, while further investigation revealed repeated preparation of fake documents by Aggarwal.
