Fake police office busted in Meerut
Meerut. Police in Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut district have busted an organized honey-trap gang that used social media as its primary tool to extort lakhs of rupees from young men. The gang would befriend young men on Instagram, lure them to a meeting spot, and then take them to a fake police office. There, they would extort large sums of money by threatening them with police action, legal cases, imprisonment, and even staged police encounters. Following the exposure of the racket, the police have arrested two accused individuals, while continuous raids are being conducted to apprehend other gang members.
According to police officials, the preliminary investigation reveals that the gang operated according to a well-devised plan. Initially, contact was established with young men through female gang members or social media accounts created in the names of women. After striking up a friendship on Instagram and gradually building rapport, the victims were invited to meet at a designated location once their trust had been won.
Once the young men arrived, other gang members would swing into action. The accused would take them to a location designed to resemble a police office. The setting—complete with police-style uniforms, nameplates, chairs, files, and other paraphernalia—was crafted to convince anyone that it was a genuine police station. The victims were then told that they were implicated in a criminal case or that a serious complaint had been lodged against them.
According to the police, gang members would intimidate the victims by posing as police officers or personnel. They threatened to register cases against them for obscenity, harassment of women, or other serious offenses. Furthermore, in some instances, victims were subjected to psychological pressure through threats of staged encounters and imprisonment. Terrified by the prospect of public disgrace and legal action, the young men would feel compelled to pay the amounts demanded by the accused.
The investigation has also revealed that the gang employed various methods to carry out its extortion activities. Some victims were made to pay cash on the spot, while in many instances, online payments were also collected. The police are now examining bank accounts, mobile phones, digital payment records, and social media activity to uncover the gang’s entire network.
A special team was formed by the Meerut Police after receiving information about the gang’s activities. Acting on technical surveillance and confidential intelligence, the police arrested two accused individuals. Interrogation has revealed crucial information, based on which a search for other gang members is underway. The police believe that multiple individuals may be involved in this network and that the gang had been active for a long time.
The police have also recovered several incriminating and suspicious items from the fake police office. These reportedly include police-style uniforms, identification-related items, files, mobile phones, electronic devices, and other materials. The recovered items are being examined to determine in which crimes they were utilized.
Officials state that the criminal backgrounds of the arrested individuals are being investigated to ascertain whether they have committed similar offenses in the past. Additionally, authorities are investigating whether the gang has links to other districts or states.
The police have urged the public to exercise caution when befriending strangers on social media and sharing personal information. Officials advised that if anyone claiming to be a police officer demands money in a suspicious manner or attempts intimidation, the local police should be informed immediately. Under no circumstances should money be handed over without verification, nor should one agree to meet an unknown person alone at an unfamiliar location.
Cyber experts also note that criminals are increasingly using social media platforms to target people through novel methods. Therefore, it is crucial to remain vigilant during online interactions, avoid sharing personal information, and immediately report any suspicious activity.
Currently, the Meerut Police are conducting a thorough investigation into the entire matter. Interrogation of the arrested accused is underway, and digital evidence recovered from their possession is being analyzed. The police expect that as the investigation progresses, other members of the gang will also be arrested, leading to the complete exposure of this illegal extortion network operated through honey-traps and a fake police office.
