Farms flooded due to breach in embankment of Ghaggar river in Punjab’s Sangrur
Chandigarh (IANS). Three major breaches in the Ghaggar flowing above the danger mark on Wednesday flooded farms in Punjab’s Sangrur districts.
The cracks have come in Makorad Sahib, Fulad and Mandvi villages.
Within hours of the breach in the river embankment, thousands of acres of paddy crops were submerged in water. The flood water has not yet entered the residential areas.
Due to rise in water level in the river due to heavy rains, breaches have occurred in the embankment at many places. State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams failed to prevent the embankments from breaching.
To make relief operations more effective across the state, 14 teams of NDRF and two teams of SDRF are working in the flood-affected areas, a government statement said on Tuesday.
Of these, three NDRF teams have been deployed in Mohali, five in Ropar, two in Patiala, one team each in Jalandhar, Fatehgarh Sahib, Sangrur and SBS Nagar. Also three teams have been put on alert.
