Fire at ethanol plant under construction; four workers critically injured.

Nayagarh. Four workers were critically injured in a fire at an under-construction ethanol plant in Odisha’s Nayagarh district on Wednesday. The incident occurred at the plant, which is being built near Gateri village under the jurisdiction of the Nuagaon police station. According to initial reports, a fire suddenly broke out while a boiler was being tested in one of the plant’s units, engulfing four workers who were present at the site. Chaos ensued following the accident.

The injured workers were immediately rushed to the Nayagarh District Headquarters Hospital for treatment. Doctors there administered first aid. Due to the severity of their condition, they were subsequently referred to Bhubaneswar for advanced medical care. They are currently undergoing treatment.

The injured workers have been identified as Bibhuti Pradhan (from Kanigiri village), Sarat Sahu (from Mahipur village), Dilip Nayak (from Ghadeibandha village), and Braja Kishore Pradhan (from Itamati village). All four were reportedly engaged in construction and technical work at the plant.

Preliminary information indicates that boiler testing was underway in one of the ethanol plant’s units on Wednesday when the fire suddenly broke out. The fire spread so rapidly that the workers nearby did not have enough time to react or escape. Four workers were caught in the blaze and sustained serious injuries.

Panic gripped the other employees and workers on the premises as soon as the incident occurred. Arrangements were made to rescue the injured workers from the fire and transport them to the hospital. Given their critical condition, they were rushed to the Nayagarh District Headquarters Hospital without delay.

Doctors at the district hospital examined the four workers. After administering first aid and assessing their condition, it was decided to transfer them to Bhubaneswar to ensure access to advanced medical facilities. Consequently, all the injured were referred for better treatment.

The exact cause of the fire has not yet been ascertained. Initially, the incident is being linked to an accident that occurred during boiler testing; however, the specific technical fault or other cause behind the fire can only be confirmed after an investigation.

Adherence to safety standards is crucial during the testing of machinery and equipment in industrial units under construction. Testing equipment such as boilers, in particular, requires continuous monitoring of temperature, pressure, and technical safety systems. Consequently, questions regarding the safety protocols implemented at the plant may arise following this accident.

During the investigation, it will be vital to determine the procedure followed for the boiler testing and whether all necessary safety arrangements were in place at the time. Additionally, the investigation may examine how many employees and workers were present in the unit during the testing and whether they had been provided with safety equipment.

Given the gravity of the incident, details regarding the safety measures adopted by the plant management will also be significant. Facilities such as firefighting equipment, emergency exits, and safety training for employees are considered essential for handling fires or technical accidents in industrial units.

Construction work on an ethanol plant is underway near Gateri village. Alongside construction, the installation and testing of machinery and equipment in various units of the plant are also being carried out. It was during this process that the accident reportedly occurred on Wednesday.

Following the outbreak of the fire, the immediate priority was to save the workers’ lives and ensure they received medical treatment. The four critically injured workers were first sent to Nayagarh and subsequently to Bhubaneswar. News of the accident has caused anxiety among the families of the injured workers.

In such industrial accidents, examining safety protocols alongside technical factors is crucial. Only a detailed investigation into whether prescribed standards were followed during the boiler testing will reveal the actual cause of the accident.

It is not yet clear whether the fire caused any major structural damage to the plant. Operations in the affected unit are likely to be disrupted following the incident. The safety status of the equipment and the plant can only be assessed following an inspection by technical experts.

The incident has also highlighted the issue of worker safety in industrial projects under construction. It is essential to provide adequate safety gear and training to employees working near heavy machinery and equipment that operates under high temperatures or pressure. Furthermore, arrangements for immediate medical assistance in the event of an emergency are also crucial.

Following the serious injury of four workers, attention will now focus on a detailed investigation and the determination of accountability. The inquiry will clarify whether the fire broke out due to a sudden technical malfunction or if there was a lapse in safety protocols.

For the time being, the injured workers—Vibhuti Pradhan, Sharat Sahu, Dilip Nayak, and Braj Kishore Pradhan—have been sent to Bhubaneswar for advanced medical treatment. Meanwhile, the exact cause of the fire remains to be ascertained. A complete picture of the accident at the ethanol plant under construction will emerge only after the investigation is concluded.
