Firing during robbery bid in Jajpur: Odisha CM announces ex-gratia for kin of two deceased men, Crime Branch begins probe

Jajpur: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi today announced ex-gratia for the kin of the two deceased men who were shot dead by a group of miscreants for protesting their robbery bid in Panikoili of Jajpur district yesterday.

CM Majhi expressed his deep condolences over the death of the two men and announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each for their next kin, informed the Chief Minister’s Office (COM) in its X handle.

As per the announcement of the Chief Minister, the State government will also bear the expenses of the treatment of the persons who were injured in the incident, added the COM.

A group of four armed miscreants in two bikes reportedly reached a jewellery shop ‘Panda Alankar’ located on the roadside of NH-16 in Panikoili of the district in broad daylight yesterday and threatened the employees with guns and attempted to loot the ornaments. However, when the employees protested their robbery bid, the miscreants fired at them.

As many as three employees of the jewellery shop along with an electrician, who had gone to the shop to fix some electrical problem, sustained bullet injuries.

All of them were rushed to the Jajpur District Headquarter Hospital (DHH) in a critical condition. Later, Sunil Ray of Kalasdiha, one of the employees of the jewellery shop, was shifted to the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack, where he succumbed to his injuries. The electrician, named Nilamadhab Panda of Soti village, also breathed his last while undergoing treatment at the DHH.

On the other hand, the locals after realizing about robbery, caught hold of the two looters while two others managed to escape. An acute tension prevailed in the area after some locals thrashed one of the miscreants and held another hostage at the jewellery shop.

On being informed, the local police reached the spot and tried to pacify the angry locals and rescue the robbers from them. However, the situation was such tensed and the locals were so fumed over the firing that D.I.G of Police Charan Singh Meena and SP Yashpratap Shrimal arrived at the spot. They could manage to rescue the miscreants after convincing the locals following hours of discussion and assurance to take action against the accused persons.

In course of probe, police seized a bike, gun and some used bullets from the spot of crime. They detained the two miscreants for interrogation and initiated a search operation to trace and nab the other two miscreants who are still at large after committing the crime. A scientific team was also roped-in to assist in the investigation.

Meanwhile, Crime Branch ADG Vinaytosh Misra informed that a STF of the Crime Branch also joined the probe today.
