Founder of Shankar Netralaya, Dr. SS Badrinath passes away
CHENNAI: Renowned vitreoretinal surgeon and founder of Shankara Nethralaya Dr SS Badrinath, who ensured affordable eye care for millions, died at his residence on Tuesday due to old age, a hospital source said.
He was 83 years old. The Chennai-born surgeon is survived by his wife, pediatrician Dr Vasanthi Badrinath, and two sons, Ananth and Sheshu.
Condoling his demise, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that Badrinath’s contribution to eye care and his continuous service to the society has left an indelible mark.

Lauding Dr Badrinath as an epitome of extraordinary vision, selfless service and compassion, Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi in a post on ‘X’ said, “Through #Sankarnetralaya, he has transformed the lives of millions of the poor and needy “Condolences to his family” and followers. om Shanti!”
Expressing deep condolences to his family and friends, Chief Minister MK Stalin said he was saddened to know about the demise of renowned ophthalmologist SS Badrinath.
AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami said that because of Badrinath’s concern for the society, his organization was successful in providing vision to many people. “He provided free eye care to the poor and dedicated his life to the betterment of the society,” Palaniswami said in a statement.
