Fraud engineer sent payment link on WhatsApp, Rs 7 lakh deducted from account
Raigarh: Cases of fraud have come to light in the past by uploading fake toll free customer care numbers on Google. A similar case has come to light in Kotwali Raigarh police station area. The swindler, posing as a customer care engineer in the name of MI TV repair, defrauded a local resident of Rs 7 lakh.
The victim yesterday applied to the police station and lodged a report of online fraud. The victim told that on 13/10/2023, he searched the customer care number from Google for repair of MI TV and called, after some time a link of payment was sent to the victim’s WhatsApp from an unknown number in which registration/service 400 Was told Rs. The victim tried to send money through his UPI link but found that the amount was not credited. After that again a call came from a new mobile number who said that I am the customer care engineer, if the payment is not going through your link then we will come to your house and repair the TV and then take the charge in cash at home. On realizing that money was being deducted from the account without any knowledge on the morning of 20/10/2023, I immediately went to the bank and got the bank account, UPI number and ATM card closed. Information received from the bank that from 14/10/2023 to 20/10/2023, approximately Rs 7,00000 seven lakh has been withdrawn from the account through UPI by the holder of the mobile number. An offense of fraud has been registered against an unknown person holding the customer care mobile number on the application.
