Goa accident: Court grants interim protection to Mercedes owner

Panaji (IANS). A court in Goa’s Ponda on Wednesday granted interim protection to Meghna Savardekar, the owner of the Mercedes car that mowed down three villagers on Sunday night.

“The applicant is granted interim security/bail pending disposal of the application for anticipatory bail on merits. In the event of arrest of the applicant, he shall be released on a personal bond of Rs.20,000 and one surety of like amount.

Additional Sessions Judge Cholu M. Gauns, Ponda, Panaji, said, “The applicant will cooperate in the investigation of the crime. She will not tamper with the evidence directly or indirectly. She will not influence the witnesses.”

The next hearing is to be held on August 16.

Angered by the death of fellow villagers, hundreds of people from Divar village gathered outside the police station on Tuesday demanding the arrest of Savardekar, claiming that she was driving the vehicle when the accident happened and not her husband.

Three people were killed and three others seriously injured when a speeding Mercedes rammed into three cars and two two-wheelers on their way to Panaji at Banastari bridge in Ponda taluka, 17 km from here, on Sunday night. Went.

After the accident, people present at the spot told reporters that the car was being driven by a woman. However, the police have arrested one person.

According to the police, 48-year-old Paresh Sinai Savardekar, husband of Meghna, the driver of the car, has been arrested.

The deceased were identified as Suresh Phadte, 58, of Diwar-Kumbarjua and his wife Bhavna, 52, as well as Anoop Karmarkar, 26, of Bandora, Marakaim.
