Governor visited Sadam, talked to farmers

Sikkim: Governor Laxman Prasad Acharya today participated in the foundation day program of Saipatri Sangh at the community hall of Sadam Suntale. Addressing the gathering, Governor Laxman Prasad Acharya congratulated the NGO on its foundation day. He handed over a sum of Rs. Rs 1.5 lakh to NGO for farmers’ welfare. The Governor appreciated the progressive farmers of GPU for focusing on agriculture and livestock farming. He stressed that the agricultural schemes and projects of the State and Central Government should be utilized to their full and maximum capacity. He pointed out that Sikkim is one of the states which is known for its organic farming and urged to continue this activity and bring glory to the state as well as the country. He inspired to create a self-reliant society in terms of farming and highlighted the examples of Kisan Credit Card, PM Kisan Samman Nidhi and many other projects launched by the government for the benefit of progressive farmers.

The Governor told the students that they should be determined and aim to achieve higher goals in their lives as the future of the country depends on them. He spoke at length about the National Cadet Corps which aims to develop character, brotherhood, discipline, secular outlook, spirit of courage and ideals of selfless service among the young citizens. Agriculture Minister L.N. Sharma underlined that the Governor visiting the farmers’ fields is a commendable act on his part, as it encourages the farmers to continue their business. Stating that agriculture and livestock are the future and the future is agriculture and livestock, and urged the attendees to aim to increase the state’s food production both in quality and quantity. Additionally, he appraised the various steps taken by the Department in successfully implementing the Central and State Government schemes and explained how these schemes have helped in the upliftment of the individuals doing agriculture business. Saipatri Sangh President Birbal Chhetri gave information about the NGO. He said that the NGO was started in 2008 with the contribution of progressive farmers. On the occasion, the Governor was felicitated by the members of the NGO, after which agricultural and horticultural farming equipment and checks of Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) and Pig Production Incentive Scheme (PPIS) and RCC water tank were distributed. , Regional MLA Farwanti Tamang, Gangtok MLA Y.T. participated in the program. were also present. Lepcha, District President (Namchi) Anjita Rajalim, Namchi DC M Bharani Kumar, SDPO Mingyur T. Nadik along with officials from horticulture and agriculture departments and other line departments, panchayats, progressive farmers and students were present. Earlier today, the Governor along with the Minister and other officials visited the farms of Kumar Chhetri and Gopal Chhetri, who grow tomatoes (Romeo species), cherry peppers and beans. He also inspected the ornamental grass carp and common carp fish farms of Poonam Limbu and Lachi Maya Chhetri. After this, the Governor planted broccoli saplings in a field, followed by a brief interaction with progressive farmers.
