Govt bans export of non-basmati rice due to rise in rice prices
The Government of India has banned the export of non-basmati rice. This order has come into force with immediate effect. The government has issued an order in this regard. The central government has decided to impose this ban because of the apprehension of a drop in production due to damage to kharif crops, especially paddy, due to delayed monsoon.
According to the Ministry of Food and Consumer Affairs, to ensure adequate availability in the Indian market and to check rising prices of non-basmati rice in the domestic market, the central government has decided to amend the export policy. It has been decided to ban the export of non-basmati rice with immediate effect while exempting it from 20 percent export duty.
The government itself admitted that an increase in the prices of rice is being seen. Rice prices in the retail market have seen an increase of 11.5 per cent in the last one year, while there has been a jump of three per cent in a month. On 8 September 2022, the government had decided to impose 20 per cent export duty on non-basmati rice exports. So that the availability in the domestic market can be increased and the prices can also be reduced. But even after the 20 per cent export duty, non-basmati rice exports saw an increase. This spurt has been observed due to the sharp increase in prices in the international market due to the global political situation. El Nino and bad weather in rice producing countries are also one of the reasons for the boom. The export of non-basmati white rice accounts for 25 per cent of the total rice exports.
