Half-size statue of Mahatma Jyotirao Phule unveiled in Latur

Maharashtra: Mahatma Jyotirao Phule fought relentlessly for gender equality, education, and against the caste system until his last breath. Senior thinker Dr. Nagorao Kumbhar said that the work of Mahatma Phule and Savitribai Phule to promote the values of equality in society is a matter of pride and a source of inspiration. He said that real social change is possible only through the ideological revolution initiated by Mahatma Phule.
Dr. Kumbhar was speaking as the chief guest at the recent unveiling of a half-size statue of Mahatma Jyotirao Phule to commemorate Savitribai Phule’s birth anniversary at Majha Ghar, a shelter home near Budhoda village in Ausa. The event was attended by writers Aruna Divegaonkar, Pramod Jhinjde, Rajendra Kasar, Harishchandra Sude, Advocate Shobhat Tai Gomare, Dr. Neelam Panhale, Maya Sorte, Ranjana Chavan, and Ranjana Hasure, among others. In his speech, Dr. Kumbhar
stated that Mahatma Phule worked to ensure equal opportunities for people of all castes and religions. Believing education to be the most powerful tool for social change, Phule started India’s first school for girls and underprivileged communities, establishing an education system based on equal access to knowledge. He strongly opposed caste-based discrimination and firmly believed that society could progress only when women were educated. Therefore, he spoke out against social evils like child marriage and opposed the ban on remarriage of widows.
