Horn blowing competition organized in Kisama, Nagaland

Kisama: A traditional horn blowing competition was held in Kisama village of Nagaland to revive the dying practice and create awareness among the new generation. Various tribes participated in the horn blowing competition at the main grounds of Naga Heritage Village, Kisama. During the competition, the Angami tribe was declared the winner, followed by the Chang and Chakhesang tribes in second and third place respectively. The horn playing, known as Thustukhu Kumusta, is derived from the Chakhesang dialect of Nagaland.

The traditional horn used during competition is usually made from or shaped like the horn of an animal, arranged to be blown through a hole in its pointed end to produce sound. This primary tool has a variety of functions in different cultures, however, common cases of its use are celebration and alertness to impending danger.

With the advent of modernity, this method of communication that has been prevalent for generations is almost disappearing. The competition was organized by an organization called Tribal Vision and sponsored by the Department of Youth and Sports Resources, Nagaland in collaboration with the Nagaland Tourism Department.
