Online Filing of Nominations: Election Commission’s New Facility

Tamil Nadu: The Election Commission of India has introduced a new facility for filing online nominations for the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.

Candidates can also obtain permissions for holding public meetings, organizing processions, setting up temporary party offices, and filing nominations through the ‘Suvidha 2.0’ app launched by the Election Commission of India. Yesterday (March 16), a consultative meeting regarding the Model Code of Conduct was held at the Ribbon House in Chennai with representatives from all recognized political parties; the meeting was presided over by Chennai’s District Election Officer and Corporation Commissioner, Kumargurubaran.

Speaking to reporters following this meeting, Kumargurubaran stated:

The Election Commission of India has announced the election dates for Tamil Nadu. There are 16 Assembly constituencies in Chennai. For these 16 constituencies, 375 zonal committees—comprising both police and election officials—have been constituted. These teams will be responsible for preparing the voting machines, dispatching them to the polling stations, and retrieving them from the polling centers once the voting process is complete.

Approximately 16,500 polling station officials are to be appointed. They will undergo training on an Assembly constituency-wise basis.

A control room has been established at the District Election Office (Ribbon Building). Complaints can be registered with this control room via the toll-free number 18004257012.

A candidate contesting from any Assembly constituency is permitted to spend a maximum of up to ₹40 lakh on the election campaign; the details regarding permissible expenses have been made available to the political parties. A ‘rate chart’ (invoice) has been prepared to calculate election-related expenditures. A candidate’s election expenses will be calculated based on this specific rate chart.

The Election Commission of India has initiated a process enabling candidates to apply—via an app named “Suvidha 2.0″—for permissions to organize public meetings, conduct processions, set up temporary party offices, and file their nominations. Candidates can also apply through the website https://suvidha.eci.gov.in. To obtain permission through this website, you must apply 48 hours prior to the concerned event.
