IIT launches unprecedented drone technology training for armed forces personnel

Guwahati: In an unprecedented move, the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IIT Guwahati) has launched an innovative three-month drone technology training program designed for Junior Commissioned Officers (JCOs) and Other Rank Officers (ORs). Aimed at modernizing the operations of the armed forces, this initiative equips participants with advanced drone skills, paving the way for potential careers after retirement in the emerging drone technology sector.

The comprehensive programme, run by key departments and centres, including the Center for Drone Technology, takes a holistic approach by linking theoretical knowledge with practical applications. With a group of 30 participants representing various branches of the armed forces, the course covers a range of subjects including drone technology, electrical, electronics and mechanical engineering and robotics. Participants engage in practical training, including flight simulator exercises, basic assembly, risk assessment and analysis, and drone equipment maintenance.

Highlighting the importance of the programme, Brigadier Rajeev Kapoor emphasizes its role in facilitating a seamless transition for the armed forces personnel. The training provides valuable insight into the dynamics of drone technology and its versatile applications in the civilian sector. The emphasis on practical training ensures that participants not only understand the theoretical concepts but also gain proficiency in the practical aspects important for effective drone operations.

This pioneering initiative marks the beginning of a series of Skill Upgradation Officer Courses by IIT Guwahati. The overarching goal is to enhance the skill set of armed forces personnel, opening up new career avenues in emerging technologies. By focusing on areas such as drone technology, IIT Guwahati is at the forefront of empowering armed forces personnel to adapt and excel in the dynamic landscape of modern technology.
