Imran Khan’s Attock Jail Menu Includes Desi Chicken, Mutton And Ghee: Pakistan SC Told
A report detailing the current living conditions of former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan in the Attock jail was submitted in the Supreme Court on Monday. The report stated that the Chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf is getting adequate facilities and is even being served chicken and mutton inside the jail premises, The News International reported.
This comes weeks after Khan’s wife Bushra Bibi and his lawyer stated that the cricketer-turned-politician was being kept under deplorable conditions. According to the Pakistani news outlet, the report was filled in pursuance of the Supreme Court order that demanded a thorough information on Khan’s living conditions.
According to The News International, the report was submitted from the attorney general’s office on behalf of the Attock jail’s superintendent. In the report, the attorney general stated that the jail authorities are providing proper security and facilities to the high-profile prisoners. “The most safe and secure confinement of this jail is Block No.02 which was vacated and a section consisting of four cells was declared as the high observation block for confinement of the said convicted prisoner,” the report stated. It was noted that the neighbouring confinement has been vacated to ensure the greater safety of the former Prime Minister. The report further noted that Khan is being served desi chicken twice a week as per his wish. His menu includes mutton, ghee, etc.
Earlier this month, a trial court in Islamabad sentenced the former prime minister to three years in prison in the infamous Toshakhana case. In a controversial decision, Khan was taken to Attock jail in Punjab instead of the court-ordered Adiala jail. Earlier this month, Khan’s wife Bushra Bibi wrote a letter to the Punjab government claiming that his husband might be getting “poisoned” in the Attock jail and demanded that Khan should be kept in B-class facilities, given his stature.
Three cameras deployed and security around the jail premises strengthened
According to The News International, the report stated that the convict had been provided with better facilities under the Government of the Punjab, Home Department. Lahore order No SO(PRP)2-4/2023(7) dated 11.08.2023. It was further stated that the walls and washroom where Khan is being kept have been plastered and the PTI chief takes morning and evenning walks within the jail premises. Four jail officials under the supervision of an assistant superintendent in each shift (a total of three eight-hour shifts) had been deployed at the confinement cell. Three cameras have been installed to keep an eye on the movement of the deployed staff.
The report emerged as contradictory to the claims made by Khan’s lawyer a few weeks ago. On August 7, Khan’s lawyer Naeem Haider Panjutha touched upon the deplorable condition in which Khan was kept. “I asked Khan Sahib about the situation in jail after his arrest. He said he is being kept in a dark, small, C-Class, chakki wala (manual labour) room. He said there is an open washroom there, which does not have a shower,” Panjutha told the media, Dawn reported. “He said the jail has flies in the morning and insects in the evening,” he added.
