Punjab: Farmers call for ‘rail roko’ to increase pressure on the government

Punjab: Farmer organizations have announced a major agitation to press their pending demands. Various farmer unions have announced a nationwide “rail roko” (rail blockade) movement on April 17th. Following this decision, preparations for the agitation have once again intensified in several states, including Punjab. Farmer organizations say the government has yet to take any concrete action on their key demands, forcing them to once again take to the streets and railways. They allege that despite repeated talks, there has been no progress toward a solution. As part of the proposed agitation, farmers plan to block various railway tracks across the country, which is likely to disrupt train services. Farmers say this step is being taken out of compulsion to effectively convey their voice to the government.
Farmer organizations in Punjab have begun mobilizing their workers. Meetings are underway in villages, discussing the strategy and preparations for the agitation. Farmers say they will protest peacefully but remain firm on their demands. Farmer leaders stated that their key demands include a guaranteed minimum support price (MSP) for crops, loan waivers, and resolution of other agricultural issues. They argue that farming is becoming increasingly loss-making, impacting farmers’ economic well-being. The government has yet to officially respond to this announcement, but the administration has instructed railway and security agencies to remain vigilant in anticipation of a potential situation. Preparations are underway to enhance security in sensitive areas.
Experts believe that if this movement escalates to a large scale, it could severely impact railway traffic and cause inconvenience to the general public. However, they also maintain that finding a solution through dialogue is the best option. This farmers’ announcement has also sparked political turmoil in Punjab and other states. Various political parties are responding to the issue and demanding a swift resolution from the government. Overall, the proposed “rail roko” movement on April 17th has once again heightened tensions between farmers and the government. Now it will be important to see whether a solution is found through talks or the movement takes to the ground and affects rail services.
