Iranian President reached Syria on historic visit
Damascus (IANS) | Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi arrived in Syria on Wednesday. This is the first visit to Syria by an Iranian leader since the start of the conflict in the Arab nation in 2011. Raisi was received at Damascus International Airport by officials from the Syrian Foreign Ministry and representatives of the presidency, Xinhua news agency reported.
A reception was held for Raeesi at the Qasr al-Shaab presidential palace after which he met with President Bashar al-Assad. According to Iranian state media, the two leaders are expected to hold wide-ranging political and economic talks, following which a number of agreements will be signed.
The delegation accompanying Raeesi includes Foreign Minister Hussein Amir-Abdollahian, Defense Minister Mohammad Reza Ashtiani and other senior officials. Iran supported al-Assad during the Syrian War.
