Israel considering climate law to reduce greenhouse gas emissions

JERUSALEM: Israel is considering a comprehensive climate law that would include a national target for reducing greenhouse gas emissions for the first time, the country’s environmental protection ministry said. The proposed bill states that greenhouse gas emissions will be reduced by 30 percent in 2030 compared to 2015 and then net-zero emissions will be achieved by 2050, Xinhua news agency reported.
According to ministry data, the total amount of greenhouse gas emissions in Israel in 2022 was 3.5 percent higher than the previous year. The new law also includes the establishment of a Climate Cabinet led by the Prime Minister, a Climate Council for policy-making, and a multidisciplinary expert committee to provide professional input and review.
Additionally, the legislation would require every government plan involving emissions and other climate impacts to conduct a climate risk assessment. A climate law was approved by the previous government in May 2022, but could not be approved by the parliament which was dissolved a month later.
